Prayers for our new Prime Minister

Andy Burnham is now the leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the UK. The Apostle Paul urges us in 1 Timothy 2:2 to "pray for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness".

Below are some prayers for our new Prime Minister and his Government as they face a range of challenges over the next few months.

Pray for wisdom in leadership

Sovereign Lord, we ask that you bless and strengthen Andy Burnham and his family as he takes up the office of Prime Minister. Grant him wisdom, humility and integrity. Help him to seek justice, to act with compassion, and to govern in ways that promote the common good. May he recognise that true wisdom comes from You. Amen.

Pray for the protection of life

Lord, we pray that You would shape the Prime Minister's thinking on matters of life and death. Give him the courage to protect the dignity and value of every human life, especially those who are elderly, disabled or terminally ill. We pray that future decisions on assisted suicide would uphold the sanctity of life and provide compassionate care rather than a pathway to ending life. Amen.

Pray for Christian presence in political debate

Lord Jesus, we pray for effective and gracious Christian presence and influence in political debate. Strengthen those you have placed in the corridors of power to wisely explain Biblical truth, allowing the truth about human flourishing to be attentively listened to and courageously acted upon. Amen.

Pray for the protection of life

Lord, we pray that You would shape the Prime Minister's thinking on matters of life and death. Father, we ask that Andy Burnham would be guided by truth as he considers issues relating to sex and gender. Give him wisdom to protect the rights, dignity and safety of women and children, while treating every person with compassion and respect. May legislation and public policy reflect truth, justice and genuine care for all. Amen.

Pray for the protection of children

Lord Jesus, we thank You for growing recognition of the dangers posed by gambling and excessive social media use. Give the Prime Minister wisdom to pursue policies that safeguard children and young people from exploitation, addiction and harmful online content, enabling them to flourish. Amen.

Pray for justice and compassion

Gracious God, help Andy Burnham to lead with honesty and fairness. As he makes decisions on immigration, poverty, social care and the economy, give him compassion for the vulnerable, wisdom in difficult choices, and a commitment to uphold justice. May he seek policies that strengthen families, protect the weak and promote peace within our nation. Amen.

Pray for faith and openness to God

Father, we pray for Andy Burnham personally. Thank You for the Christian influences in his upbringing and for his acknowledgement of the value of Catholic social teaching. Draw him ever closer to Yourself. Place wise Christian voices around him, soften his heart to the gospel, and may he come to know the hope and forgiveness freely given through Jesus Christ. Amen.
