Christian Nationalism

10 resources you should know about Christian nationalism

Want to understand Christian nationalism better? Keen to listen to other sides of the debate? Here are ten resources that will help you.

Written by Dan Wells as part of the Christian nationalism resources series.

1. 'Christian Nationalism: an explainer', Theos

The Christian think tank Theos has produced a helpful and detailed article considering Christian nationalism within a British context. It considers what Christian nationalism is, and is not, what Christian nationalists want, and some of the potential theological issues involved. Theos is working on more research in this area, and have also released a report on attitudes to Christianity and Britishness called ‘Beyond Christian nationalism’.

2. 'Love is not an executive order', Barnabas Aspray

Barnabas Aspray, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University, Baltimore in the United States, writes about how Christian politics should be different in this article for Seen & Unseen. He looks at what Christian nationalism gets wrong and how fear has never been a motivator of wise, just, and righteous action.

3. 'What Wicca’s Origins Teach Us About Christian Nationalism', Joe Carter

You might wonder what witchcraft has to do with Christian nationalism, but Joe Carter’s article for The Gospel Coalition is a fascinating read. It delves into the origins of Wicca as a fabricated religion, and how that helps us understand some of what is happening with Christian nationalism on both sides of the Atlantic.

4. '6 Questions for Christian Nationalists', Kevin DeYoung

Kevin DeYoung writes that he is not a Christian nationalist, but he ”almost could be.” His article for Clearly Reformed considers what is attractive about Christian nationalism in a US context, but also where some of its ideologies lead. DeYoung gives six questions that Christian nationalists in America must answer in order to be credible, and to respond to serious concerns about their beliefs.

5. 'Reading our Times' podcast, Theos

Theos has run a series of excellent interviews with various authors about Christian nationalism for their ‘Reading our Times’ podcast. The discussions consider a range of topics, from the way the Bible can be weaponised to the truth behind immigration. Of particular note are the interviews with Tobias Cremer about ‘How do politicians weaponise Christianity’, and with Bijan Omrani about ‘What does England owe to Christianity’.

6. 'Unpacking the Theology of Christian Nationalism', Helen Paynter

Revd Dr Helen Paynter of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence gave a talk entitled ‘Unpacking the Theology of Christian Nationalism’ at St James’ Church, Islington in January 2026. The presentation considers the far-right and Christian nationalism, and their theological beliefs and implications, and is available to watch on YouTube.

7. ‘God is an Englishman’ by Bijan Omrani and ‘Dominion’ by Tom Holland

Arguments for Christian nationalism emphasise the role Christianity has played in the history of the United Kingdom. There is much to understand and celebrate about the historical contribution of Christianity to our country. To think more about this subject, you might consider ‘God is an Englishman’ by Bijan Omrani (Forum, 2026) or ‘Dominion’ by Tom Holland (Abacus, 2020).

8. 'Kingdom over Nation', Churches Together in England

Churches Together in England have been gathering input from churches of various denominations across England, and reflecting on the right way to respond. They have produced a number of resources including video resources, church statements, and a bible study series called ‘Kingdom over nation’. The resources can be accessed through the Churches Together website (free sign-up required).

9. ‘The Case for Christian Nationalism’ by Stephen Wolfe

There are an increasing number of books from America by writers who identify as Christian Nationalists. Probably the best known argument for Christian Nationalism is ‘The Case for Christian Nationalism’ by Stephen Wolfe (Canon 2022). There is also ‘Mere Christendom’ by Douglas Wilson (Canon 2023) and ‘Frequently Shouted Questions About Christian Nationalism’ also by Wilson (Canon 2025). You may find some of the views expressed in these extremely controversial, and there would be much we disagree with, but it can be useful to understand what its proponents are saying.

10. ‘The Church, The Far Right, and The Claim to Christianity’ by Helen Paynter and Maria Power

On the other side of the argument, there is ‘The Church, The Far Right, and The Claim to Christianity’ edited by Helen Paynter and Maria Power (SCM Press 2024), drawing on various authors to give their perspective on Christian nationalism and far-right political views. There is also ‘Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes’ by Steven Smith (Yale University Press 2023), from an American perspective, considering how a positive patriotism can avoid extremism.
