New APPG on free speech launched

A new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Free Speech has been formed, aiming to protect and promote freedom of expression in the UK.

The group, chaired by Conservative MP Nick Fletcher, will examine threats to free speech across politics, academia, and wider society.

The initiative is backed by the Free Speech Union (FSU), founded by Toby Young. Speaking about the APPG, Young said: “Free speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, democracy cannot function properly.”

He warned of increasing restrictions on speech, particularly in universities and public institutions.

The APPG’s formation comes amid concerns that the Labour Party, under Sir Keir Starmer, may introduce stricter regulations on speech, including laws against so-called ‘hate speech’.

Parliamentarians from various parties are expected to participate, although the group is likely to face opposition from those advocating for stronger speech regulations.

The APPG plans to hold meetings and publish reports to raise awareness of free speech issues and influence policy decisions.

The Free Speech Union will provide research and support for the group’s work. Young urged MPs and peers to join the APPG, stating, “We must ensure free speech is not sacrificed in the name of political convenience.”
