ChatGPT to allow erotica for verified users

Chat GPT

OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, has announced they are lifting restrictions placed on the popular AI chatbot and allowing user to produce erotica on the platform.

Along with being able to produce erotic content, the company said that ChatGPT will now respond in a more human-like fashion and with more personality due to the removal of safety restrictions.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI said, “If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way … or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it).”

Lifting restrictions

Earlier this year OpenAI upgraded their chatbot to the latest model, dubbed ChatGPT-5. However, they were subsequently forced to heavily restrict how ChatGPT behaved due to safety concerns.

These moves followed a lawsuit from the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine who took his own life after discussing suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT.

Now OpenAI are lifting those restrictions following work by the company to address mental health issues. In particular, they have implemented ‘age-gating’ in which the AI identifies whether you are underage based on your interactions with the system.

Introducing erotica

Along with lifting the safety restrictions previously imposed, OpenAI announced that users who are verified as adults will be able to produce erotica on the platform. This is part of their principle to “treat adult users like adults”. This comes after Elon Musk’s company xAI introduced two sexually explicit chatbots on their platform, Grok.

Earlier this week the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, blocked a law that would have improved safety requirements for AI chatbots’ interaction with children. Here in the UK, the Online Safety Act, which CARE campaigned for, requires age verification for pornographic images, but not written erotica.
