7 in 10 people support a ban on 'pimping websites' - poll

The public supports a ban on pimping websites that advertise the sale of sex, polling shows.

A Savanta poll of more than 2,000 UK adults for CARE found that 7 in 10 back the idea. Just 1 in 10 are opposed.

A higher proportion of women support a ban compared to men (69% vs 65%), and support is higher in the 35-54 and 55+ age groups.

It comes as MPs prepare to debate an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill to outlaw profiting from “the prostitution of another person”.

The amendment, which already has cross-party group from more than 50 MPs, would catch those who facilitate pimping sites if it is agreed.

'Vile platforms'

CARE spokeswoman Jessica Mcdowell said:

“Pimping sites are vile platforms allowing for the objectification of women, and their exploitation by human traffickers. In a dangerous online world where men are being encouraged to abuse and exploit women by people like the Tate brothers, they are even more dangerous than in years gone by.

“MPs have an opportunity to support a ban on pimping sites and see this measure enforced quickly – we urge MPs in every party to support a ban and ensure swift government action. We would also underline the importance of criminalising sex buyers, improving support for those exploited in prostitution. A ‘Nordic Model’ for the UK is long overdue.

“Pursuing this change will help to reduce the demand for sex that drives commercial sexual exploitation. The positive impact of policies of these kinds has been seen in other countries, and their introduction is recommended by the European Parliament.”
