David Smith MP appointed UK Special Envoy for Religious Freedom

David Smith MP has been named the UK Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB).

This role focuses on advocating for religious freedom globally, addressing issues like persecution and discrimination based on belief.

Smith succeeds Fiona Bruce MP, who held the position since December 2020, during which she championed the promotion of FoRB and led efforts to address recommendations from the Bishop of Truro’s review on persecuted Christians.

Smith brings extensive experience to the role, having engaged with communities facing religious persecution across regions such as Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

The appointment of David Smith, who will take up his role in the new year, shows the UK governments continued commitment to upholding an individual’s freedom of religion or belief.

Commenting on his appointment, he emphasised his commitment to safeguarding religious freedoms, stating, “These are issues I care passionately about.”
