Telegraph: Trans activists putting children at risk
Trans activists are endangering vulnerable children and young people by downplaying concerns about so-called "trans treatments", The Telegraph has said.
In an editorial published today, the newspaper states that "trans extremists are seeking to downplay the numbers of detransitioners" and "delegitimise" expert warnings.
It states: "When the final report of the Cass Review was published in April our worst fears over the provision of gender identity services for children were confirmed.
"It was a damning indictment of a medical establishment in thrall to trans activists, which compromised the wellbeing of young people by hurrying them towards life-changing treatments that most did not require and, after a time, some realised they did not want."
"Already, the controversial Tavistock gender identity clinic has been closed and replaced with eight specialist hubs which will take a more holistic approach to treating gender-questioning children.
"The previous government imposed a ban on puberty blockers being prescribed to children for gender-based reasons, and the newly-installed Health Secretary has rightly made clear his intention to retain this, despite opposition from within his own party.
"Though the last government was far too slow to act, the hope must now be that this shameful episode is drawing to a close. But how did it ever come to this? We may never know the full extent of the harm caused by prioritising dogma over evidence.
"Some young adults may face a lifetime of regret for decisions they did not fully understand.Yet still, trans extremists are seeking to downplay the numbers of detransitioners and delegitimise Dr Cass’s painstaking work. And still, those who dare challenge their pernicious orthodoxy are too often branded as bigots."
The editorial concludes: "Labour will need to display great courage in the face of a vociferous lobby which may have been discredited but has not yet been deterred."
