We just want to be treated like everyone else”

Hannah Wilson with her dog

Hannah Wilson is from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. She has a brother, a sister and lives with her Mum and Dad. She also has Down's syndrome.

In this short interview, Hannah explains why she's supporting Paul Givan's Bill at the Northern Ireland Assembly to stop abortion to birth for preborn babies with disabilities like Down's syndrome.

What are your hobbies and pastimes?

I have lots of hobbies, like music, drama, a little gardening and I have been learning to bake over Lockdown. I enjoy singing, and I upload my own videos onto my own YouTube channel.

Most of us enjoy music and drama and we enjoy life – we just want to be treated like everyone else, because we are all created in the likeness of God.

My life with Down's Syndrome

When I was younger, my sister and I went to Highland Dance classes and I passed several Dancing exams. My sister went on take part in competitions, and I was able to help do her hair and make-up.

I have been in Girl's Brigade since I was four years old and I have my Brigader's Brooch and I am now working on my Queen's Badge, I love GB because everyone is so kind and want to help.

I have dogs and cats, at home, and I enjoy looking after them. Some of them sleep on my bed and we play in the garden when the weather is dry. I help as a Junior Leader, in our Church Youth Club, attend our Youth Fellowship and I help with Creche some Sunday Mornings.

Do you have any dreams for the future, or what would you like to achieve?

I sometimes think it would be nice to live in my own home and be independent, but I would miss my family and pets too much. I would like to get a job after college and go out with friends and go on holidays and see nice places.

Why do you think changing the law is important ?

I felt very sad when this was explained to me, it feels so wrong, it touches my heart. The law should not treat some people differently from others.

How can people with Downs Syndrome add to our world ?

Most of us enjoy music and drama and we enjoy life – we just want to be treated like everyone else, because we are all created in the likeness of God.
