TAKE ACTION: On the 17th or 18th of June, MPs will debate changes to England’s abortion law that would make it even more permissive.

Amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill would disapply provisions that make abortion a crime so that women who perform their own abortions at any time up until birth do not commit an offence.

As your constituent I urge you to vote against amendments NC1 and NC20 to the Crime and Policing Bill, due to be debated on the 17th or 18th of June.

It is currently illegal – and carries potential criminal sanctions – to have an abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy, past the point when an unborn baby can survive outside the womb. These amendments would change this, and place women in more danger.

NC1 would make it so that no offence is committed “by a woman in relation to her own pregnancy”. NC20 goes even further by protecting medical professionals involved in illegal abortions from any legal consequences.

These amendments have been spurred by a small number of high-profile media stories of women being investigated. Some of these very cases were rooted in the risky practice of ‘abortion pills by post’, which are now provided without an in-person appointment.

These cases point to the need to reinstate this safeguard (supported by 71% of women), criminalise irresponsible abortion pills providers and revisit all the guidelines and training for anyone involved in handling such sensitive situations. They do not point to the need for total decriminalisation.

Amendments NC1 and NC20 would pave the way for more, not fewer, late term ‘DIY’ abortions – carried out for any reason, and at any time up until birth. Such abortions necessarily mean trauma, often lead to hospitalisations, and even see life-threatening complications.

Further liberalising our abortion laws in this way would also increase the risk of women being coerced into DIY abortion by abusive partners. And it would create an easier route for those who wish to pursue sex-selective abortions, which are usually aimed at baby girls.

Disapplying legal restraints is not compassionate, it is irresponsible and ignores babies’ worth. The current law recognises that an abortion is not simply another medical procedure either for the mother or unborn child. Uniquely, there is another human life involved.

The Preamble to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child notes the need for “special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth”. This is recognised in several areas – therapeutic surgery for the unborn, the provision of fetal pain-relief, and recognising the needs of unborn babies in child safeguarding cases.

The changes that NC1 & NC20 would bring about would make late term abortions more likely, more acceptable, and so expose more women to danger.  They would also remove one of the few remaining protections for unborn babies.

Please vote against NC1 and NC20 to safeguard more women from taking this terrible route and to protect the lives of babies who at this stage in their development are practising their breathing and now have their unique fingerprints.
