Call for problem gambling awareness-raising over Christmas
A Christian think tank has urged local authorities to highlight an increased risk of problem gambling over the Christmas period and help people access support.
CARE has written to council leaders across the UK to ask them to flag the issue through social media in order to reach those at risk, or loved ones and friends.
The charity has provided social media graphics for councils to share whilst drawing attention to local and national support services.
Ross Hendry, CEO of CARE, commented:
“Research shows that people are at increased risk of problem gambling over Christmas and new year. An early pay day in December, time off work and normal duties, and increased advertising around Boxing Day sporting events can increase the incentive to gamble.
“For most people, placing a bet is occasional fun, but we know that for a significant minority in the UK, gambling becomes a destructive habit, harming individuals and placing a huge strain on families. Most tragically, it leads to around 400 suicides a year in the UK.
“We’re urging authorities to do what they can to raise awareness about problem gambling over the Christmas period, help people know the signs, and ensure that support services are well signposted. Committing to simple output on social media can make a real difference.”
