Govt introduces a £5 cap on online slot betting

The UK government has announced new restrictions on online slot betting, capping spins at £5 for those 25 and over, and £2 for 18–24-year-olds.

Gambling Minister Fiona Twycross said the measures aim "to protect those at risk, with a particular focus on young adults," noting gambling harm can "ruin finances, relationships, and lives."

Despite the changes, critics say the proposals do not go far enough to address the surge in online gambling addiction.

GamCare reported that 45% of calls to its helpline now involve online slots, up from 34% before the pandemic. NHS referrals for gambling-related treatment have more than doubled in the past year.

The government will also introduce a mandatory levy on gambling companies, raising £100m annually for treatment and prevention.

Critics highlight that under the current voluntary system, some firms contribute as little as £1 annually. "We further welcome youth-focused stake limits," said Mark Weiss of GamCare, but added more protections are needed.

Grainne Hurst of the Betting and Gaming Council warned that "government is at risk of losing perspective," suggesting these measures cater to "anti-gambling prohibitionists" rather than striking a balanced approach.
