CARE response to The Observer article

Assisted suicide elderly palliative care hospital

The Observer has published an article about groups that oppose assisted suicide, citing CARE. We supplied the following quote to the paper:

"The campaigns mentioned encompass a broad range of groups and individuals who oppose assisted suicide, reflecting diverse opposition to the practice in wider society. Some proponents of assisted suicide have engaged in bad faith attacks on groups with a religious designation that speak on this issue. This betrays an intolerance that is not conducive to democratic debate.

"It’s also a harmful distraction. In days to come, MPs need to engage with acute concerns that assisted suicide will lead to the coercion of vulnerable people, and people choosing to end their lives because they can’t access sufficient healthcare, social care, or welfare support. People of all beliefs share these concerns and are urging parliamentarians to oppose a change in the law."
