Porn fuelling violence against women, Labour MP warns
There is 'extensive evidence' that 'pornography consumption fuels sexual violence' a Labour MP has warned.
In a debate on commercial sexual exploitation, Tonia Antoniazzi MP said pornography 'serves to dehumanise and sexually objectify women' whilst also distorting the viewers understanding of sexual behaviour.
The MP urged the new Labour Government to 'reign in the lawless activities of pornography sites' that host illegal material.
Gaps in the current law allow pimping websites to promote online adverts that you would not be allowed to place in a phone box.
In response, Jess Phillips, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department agreed that the Government 'must not rest' until it has addressed the 'national emergency' of violence against women and girls.
MPs also used the debate to warn about the rise of deepfake pornography, where AI tools are used to generate pornographic images of real people.
The Online Safety Act introduced new measures to hold pornographic websites and social media companies to account.
A key part of this legislation - age verification on all online pornographic content - has to be fully introduced.
