Seven in ten people think UK politics is overly hostile, according to a new poll.

A Savanta poll of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by CARE found that 70% of people agree with the statement “the atmosphere in UK politics has become too hostile”.

Concern about the level of hostility in politics is slightly higher among women respondents (72 per cent) compared to male respondents (69 per cent).

And it is significantly higher among respondents aged 65 and above (79 per cent) compared to younger respondents, aged 18-24 (68 per cent).

Commenting on the poll, CARE’s CEO Ross Hendry said:

“As a Christian charity operating in the heart of Westminster, we’ve been saddened to see an increasingly hostile political atmosphere in the UK in recent years.

“A significant number of MPs are standing down, with some citing the immense impact political office has had on their mental health and family life. They’ve faced awful abuse.

“We urgently need to improve the febrile atmosphere we find ourselves in, and all of us have a role to play in realising a better story. The next parliament can see change.”
