Labour drop plans for Gender Self-ID

Labour has ruled out introducing a self-ID system which would allow people to change their legal sex without a medical diagnosis.

The party had previously said it would introduce Gender Self-ID.

But shadow women and equalities secretary Anneliese Dodds said this week that medical diagnosis upholds 'confidence in the system."

Scottish Labour hold a different position after it voted to remove the medical diagnosis requirement and it said it continues to support the de-medicalisation of the process in Scotland.

At the moment, if someone wants to legally change their sex, they need to provide a medical report showing a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Applicants also have to provide evidence of living full time in their chosen gender for at least two years.

The UK Government ruled out adopting self-ID in 2020 after a consultation.

In Scotland, MSPs passed the Scottish Government's Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, but it's been blocked from becoming law by the UK Government over fears it will negatively impact the UK-wide Equalities Act.
