Concern raised that cost-of-living is forcing vulnerable women into ‘sex for rent’

The Guardian, along with leading charities, have indicated that vulnerable women in the UK are being forced into ‘sex for rent’.

Several charities have cautioned that the cost-of-living problem is causing many to be forced to engage in ‘survival sex’ to pay bills, consequently leading to increased levels of exploitation, abuse and control.

A spokesperson for charity ‘Beyond the Streets’ said:

“The cost-of-living crisis is a driver [of survival sex], and for those already vulnerable, they face considerable exploitation. There is a lack of government funding to support the needs of women, and charities are struggling as their incomes reduce, expenses increase, and they are faced with more demands on their services.”

The Observer notes that this has been an issue particularly for migrant women and asylum seekers, with Latin American Women’s Aid (LAWA) reporting numerous cases of ‘sex for rent’ in recent months involving female asylum seekers.

“It is unacceptable that women in such vulnerable circumstances are exposed so frequently to harassment and intimidation, being doubly victimised and unable to seek redress.”

Women's Aid also commented that those contacting the organisation were in “dire and desperate need” and are finding it increasingly difficult to leave abusive relationships.

“In the difficult economic context that we’re in at the moment, we know that women are experiencing increased and exacerbated levels of controlling and financial abuse from perpetrators.”

Home secretary, Suella Braverman, announced last week that she is considering new legislation aimed at countering landlords who exploit vulnerable people for sex.

A Home Office spokesperson said:

“Exploitation through ‘sex for rent’ is already illegal under the Sexual Offences Act. The government recently launched a call for evidence which brings us closer to ending this deeply harmful trend and better protecting victims...

We are committing to stopping all forms of violence and intimidation against women and girls, including domestic abuse.”
