Seven Ways to Pray for the Media
Let’s pray for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done throughout the media industry.
Media: ‘means of communicating news and information to the public’ (Collins Dictionary)
The media is a powerful instrument for change with vast potential for good or ill. Printed, broadcast and online messages shape our values and culture; often influencing important social and political issues.
Monday: CHAMPIONS OF TRUTH
‘AN HONEST WITNESS TELLS THE TRUTH; A FALSE WITNESS TELLS LIES. SOME PEOPLE MAKE CUTTING REMARKS, BUT THE WORDS OF THE WISE BRING HEALING.’
Holy Spirit, please grant wisdom and insight to those working throughout media. May they always seek to communicate with integrity and truth. For Christ’s sake we pray. Amen.
Tuesday: PRINT, BROADCASTING AND FILM
’WHATEVER IS TRUE, NOBLE, RIGHT, PURE, LOVELY, ADMIRABLE – IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT OR PRAISEWORTHY, THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS.’
Lord, we pray that public opinion will increasingly resist portrayals of gratuitous violence and other inappropriate content. Help us to be active in commenting on this and commending what is good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Wednesday: INSPIRATION AND CREATIVITY
‘DON’T LET THE WORLD AROUND YOU SQUEEZE YOU INTO ITS OWN MOULD, BUT LET GOD RE-MOULD YOUR MINDS FROM WITHIN…’
Lord of all wisdom and beauty, we ask You to equip and inspire those working in media to strive for excellence and produce original, imaginative, informative, uplifting and enjoyable material. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Thursday: ONLINE AND SOCIAL MEDIA
‘THE LORD HAS GIVEN ME HIS WORDS OF WISDOM, SO I CAN COMFORT THE WEARY. EACH MORNING HE WAKENS ME AND OPENS MY UNDERSTANDING TO HIS WILL.’
Thank You, Lord, for ever-increasing opportunities to share information online. Please help OFCOM and other agencies to foil attempts to destroy systems and cause harm to others. In Christ’s name we ask it. Amen.
Friday: INTEGRITY AND THE MEDIA
‘CAREFULLY DETERMINE WHAT PLEASES THE LORD. TAKE NO PART IN THE WORTHLESS DEEDS OF EVIL AND DARKNESS; INSTEAD, EXPOSE THEM.’
Father, please raise up people to challenge undue political, economic and social control and bias within media organisations and who will encourage transparency and impartiality throughout the industry. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Saturday: SPEAKING OUT
‘FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL WHO ARE DESTITUTE. SPEAK UP, JUDGE FAIRLY; DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF THE POOR AND NEEDY.’
God of justice and compassion, please grant opportunities and protection to journalists and others who are determined to expose corruption, oppression and exploitation – especially when their lives are at risk. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
Sunday: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS
‘AND HE SAID TO THEM, “GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO THE WHOLE CREATION“.‘
