Freedom of Speech

10 Resources you should know about Free Speech

As Christians, how should we think wisely and Biblically about freedom of speech, and how can we speak about our faith in today’s culture? Here are ten resources that might help.

1. A Theology of Free Speech

Brad Littlejohn writes a helpful article for The Gospel Coalition about freedom of speech which is both thought-provoking and stimulating. Littlejohn explores Biblical principles that undergird the right of free speech. You may also want to consider Littlejohn’s book Called to Freedom which explores the theological, moral and political ideas of freedom.

2. Why should Christians care about free speech?

In this article for Affinity, Daniel Friery outlines five cases for Christian freedom of speech, and why Christians should care about them. Looking at history, philosophy and the Bible, Friery considers how creation, natural law, anthropology, epistemology and pragmatism all argue for freedom of speech.

3. Freedom of Expression

Christophe Foltzenlogel, a legal expert for the European Center for Law & Justice, writes this short article for the Jubilee Centre. Considering recent legal cases, along with Biblical and philosophical arguments, Folzenlogel explores what it means for Christians to speak the truth in hostile times. Well worth a read.

4. Alliance Defending Freedom International

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International work around the world, taking up critical free speech cases and often representing Christians, championing rights and defending freedoms. They work in a number of different areas, and if you want to think about why freedom of speech is so important internationally, their website is a great place to start.

5. Christianity in the Workplace

Ever wondered if you are free to speak about Jesus in the workplace? This resource from the Lawyers Christian Fellowship, EA and ADF UK is a brilliant guide to current law and explains what rights you do and don’t have at work. It helps Christians navigate issues such as Sunday working, wearing a cross at work, and sharing your faith with colleagues.

6. Speak Up

The Evangelical Alliance and Lawyers Christian Fellowship put together this excellent resource a few years ago. It’s an accessible introduction for Christians to understand what the law says, and what free speech rights we have. It also gives practical advice about how to exercise free speech as we share the gospel with those around us.

7. The Messy Truth About Free Speech

This short, 10 minute, video from Vox explores free speech from a secular American perspective. Starting with the suspension of late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel in September 2025, the video looks at history and limitations of freedom of speech in the US.

8. Freedom to Insult

In 2013, comedian Rowan Atkinson spoke eloquently – and humorously – about freedom of speech, and the freedom to be insulted. It formed part of the campaign to change Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which was successful. Rowan Atkinson’s words are still relevant as he considers what it means to be intolerant of intolerance.

9. A Battle of Ideas

The Battle of Ideas features speakers from a range of backgrounds and they aim to put free speech into practice by presenting arguments from a range of different viewpoints. You’ll find a vast range of video content via their YouTube channel, including discussions on the proper limits of free speech. Some you will agree with, others you will not, which is the whole point!

10. BBC Radio’s Free Speech Series

In this series of narrated essays, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016, free speech expert Timothy Garton Ash examines key principles for free speech. Across five 15-minute episodes he explains why free speech is under attack all across the globe and what we might do about it.
