Why is British aid money being used to fund illegal abortions?

7th Dec 2018 - James Mildred

Prominent pro-life campaigner Lord Alton has raised serious questions about the role of the UK in funding illegal abortions overseas and is calling for an urgent  inquiry to take place.

“[The Government] need to determine as a matter of urgency whether Marie Stopes International is in fact promoting and performing abortions contrary to the law in Kenya. Investment in quality maternal health services should be prioritised rather than an intense imposition of abortion and population control” - Lord Alton.

Abortion provider banned in Kenya

His call follows news that Marie Stopes International (MSI) has been banned by the Kenyan Government amid serious claims that it was offering abortions which are illegal under Kenyan law. Niger has since followed suit, and ordered the closure of some centres run by MSI, on the grounds that illegal abortions were taking place there too.

The issue came to light after MSI were advertising abortion services in Kenya despite there being a blanket ban on all abortion advertising in the country.

DFID under the spotlight

Next week evidence is being taken on the UK foreign aid spending and one of the witnesses is the In+dependent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI). Earlier this month they published a damning report which criticised the department Department for International Development (DFID) for failing to improve maternal health services between 2011 and 2015. According to the ICAI, this was in part because DFID prioritised family planning, which includes the provision of contraception and abortion services over maternal health. You can read our Early Life Policy Officer’s excellent summary of the report here.

Public opposition

ComRes polling shows that 65 per cent of the British public are opposed to their tax money being spent to fund abortion overseas. We hope that this report and calls from Lord Alton will provoke further scrutiny of the current aid budget, and call on the Government to invest in quality maternal health services instead of abortion provision.
