CARE calls for more protection for churches in NI on BBC

There have been almost 450 attacks on places of worship in Northern Ireland in the last three years, according to research we released recently.

Between 2016 and 2019, 445 attacks on places of worship took place in NI, which works out at almost one every other day.

This disturbing figure followed a Freedom of Information request (FOI). Upon release of the figures, CARE NI called for a protection fund to be set up to allow churches and other religious building to bid for funds for things like CCTV, lighting or fencing.

Such a scheme exists in England and Wales, but there is no comparable scheme in NI or Scotland. CARE NI has also written to the party leaders to ask them to make manifesto commitments to create such a fund.

CARE’s exclusive research received significant press coverage which you can find below. Our CARE NI Policy Officer Mark Baillie also went on BBC Ulster, U105, Cool FM, UCB and appeared on BBC Newsline.
