Discover two key protections women and children are missing out on thanks to Government delay
Online SafetyOn Monday 15 March, Baroness Benjamin spoke to her amendment 87A to the Domestic Abuse Bill in the House of Lords. The DAB is nearing the end of its parliamentary journey and will soon become law.
Over the last few months, Baroness Benjamin has been pushing the UK Government over its failure to implement Part 3 of the Digital Economy Act 2017.
During her speech she highlighted two key protections women and children are missing out on, thanks to the Government's decision to abandon the scheme on October 16 2019.
Firstly: if Part 3 of the DEA had been implemented, then there would already be an independent regulator, with the power to challenge pornographic websites whether hosted here in the UK or abroad over the most violent and extreme pornography.
However, this protection currently does not exist because Part 3 has not been implemented.
Secondly: if Part 3 of the DEA had been implemented, age verification on all commercial, online porn websites would be in place, providing children and young people with an extra level of protection against online porn.
However, this protection currently does not exist because Part 3 was never implemented.
