In a powerful speech in the House of Lords, Crossbench Peer Baroness O’Loan spoke out about the recent vote by MPs to introduce widespread access to abortion in Northern Ireland.

On Tuesday, the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Bill had its final stages in the House of Commons where MPs considered and voted on various amendments to the Bill, including one to dramatically change NI’s abortion law.

MPs backed that amendment by 332-99. CARE’s chief executive Nola Leach said it was a dark day for Northern Ireland.

In her speech, Baroness O’Loan criticised the way in which the law has been changed, which has happened with next to no scrutiny, debate or indeed any consultation with the people of Northern Ireland.

In this clip, she exposes what the real consequences of the amendment will be, which will be to introduce abortion on demand, for no reason up to 28 weeks. As she points out, the amendment will also have ramifications for England, Wales and Scotland.
