Finishing Line: understanding end of life issues

Assisted Suicide
3 August 2015

A new five-part study guide on assisted suicide and euthanasia has been published by CARE in partnership with Keswick ministries.

Written by Professor John Wyatt author of Matters of Life and Death (IVP second edition 2009), Finishing Line is the ideal resource for church leaders, small groups and theological colleges.

This timely new material contains a DVD, leaders guide and a booklet for course participants containing bible references, questions, quotes and resources.

As far as CARE and Keswick are aware, it is the first dedicated assisted suicide study guide of its type in the UK and will go on sale for the general public from today.

The timing could not be more ideal, with MPs just weeks away from voting on the latest assisted suicide legislation, the sixth attempt in 12 years to liberalise the law.

CARE CEO Nola Leach said:

“This amazing new resource is both timely and much needed because as far as I’m aware, there is nothing else like it available on the market.

Finishing Line takes on and addresses an emotionally sensitive topic and does so admirably, not only providing first class information and reasoning, but doing so in an attractive and illuminating way.

“Even for a seasoned campaigner like myself, I was reinvigorated just reading it and it reminded me of the immense value each and every human life has.

“It has been a pleasure working with Keswick and I hope many people will take advantage of Finishing Line and find it helpful, stimulating and of immense value as well.”

CARE’s Executive Chairman Lyndon Bowring said:

“I am confident that this resource will be a positive resource that many church leaders will wish to use.”

CARE is a leading Christian charity campaigning on human dignity issues. The charity has opposed assisted suicide since its very beginning.

The new resource examines the following topics:

  1. Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide – the current scene
  2. What does it mean to be human?
  3. Can suicide be a Christian way to die?
  4. Dying well and dying faithfully – personal aspects
  5. Dying well and dying faithfully – medical and legal aspects

Finishing Line format:

DVD talks by Professor John Wyatt, with introductions by Philippa Taylor, a CARE consultant on family and bioethical issues. The DVD is attached to the Leaders Guide - which includes discussion and Q&A points for groups, pastoral notes and prayers by CARE’s prayer co-ordinator Celia Bowring. There is a printed booklet for participants with bible references, questions, quotes and resources, which comes in bundles of ten.

It is especially timely as a Labour MP, Rob Marris, is currently trying to introduce assisted suicide in England and Wales by means of a Private Members Bill.

Assisted Suicide

Where assisted suicide is legal, it makes vulnerable people feel like a burden. CARE works to uphold laws that protect those people, and to assist them to live—not to commit suicide.
