With final results declared for all regions, the main story of the day is that support for the Labour Party has declined dramatically, but disaffected voters have not transferred their support to a single party.
More information
The Conservatives, the United Kingdom Independence Party and the Liberal Democrats have all made only modest gains. Two BNP candidates have also been elected. Whilst the Green Party increased their share of the vote it did not have the necessary regional concentration to win them any additional seats. The Christian parties did not win any seats.
However, even though few seats changed hands between the parties, because of the number of outgoing MEPs choosing to stand down at these elections, there will be a considerable number of new British MEPs. Of the 72 seats at least 18 have been taken by candidates who were not previously MEPs.
